Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium Gala apples, cored and chopped into thick chunks (I leave the peels on)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla paste or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
For the Crisp Topping:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the apples: In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla extract until the apples are well-coated. Transfer the apples to the prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly.
- Make the crisp topping: In another bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the melted butter into the mixture and stir until it forms a crumbly texture.
- Assemble: Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. (35-40 minutes)
- Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. It pairs beautifully with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
